5-Axis Machining & Milling

Precision Machining Services

Milling is a machining process that utilizes rotary cutting tools to shape a workpiece. During 3-axis milling operations, the workpiece can only be cut on the X, Y, and Z axes. However, 5-axis milling allows work to be performed on two additional axes from the following options: the A-axis (rotates around the X-axis), the B-axis (rotates around the Y-axis), or the C-axis (rotates around the Z-axis). The combination of the added axes depends on the type of milling machine used.

5-axis machines offer many benefits, including increased precision and accuracy, reduced setup time, and the ability to create complex shapes. At Astro Machine Works, we have state-of-the-art 5-axis milling machines and highly skilled machinists to ensure that your parts are manufactured with the highest quality.

Advantages of 5-Axis Machining & Milling

Compared to other manufacturing processes, 5-axis milling has many advantages when used to create parts and products, such as:

  • Quicker production of complex shapes
  • Higher quality surface finishes on components
  • Easier setup requirements

Industries That Utilize 5-Axis Machining & Milling Services

Some of the industries that regularly rely on 5-axis machining for the manufacture of their components include:

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Energy
  • Industrial
  • Medical

Reverse Engineering

Companies using older equipment sometimes find that a critical component is no longer available. Reverse engineering enables them to create the missing piece rather than replace the entire machine. Our reverse engineering services begin with an evaluation of the existing component. We determine its purpose, how it was manufactured, and what materials were used to make it. Afterward, we create a detailed CAD model of the component using our advanced solid modeling software.

Reverse Engineering Application Examples

Reverse engineering can be used for various purposes, including:

  • Re-engineer a faulty component
  • Developing formal part specifications
  • Modifying and reproducing existing parts

Capabilities at Astro Machine Works

The team at Astro Machine Works has over 30 years of experience providing high-precision machine part solutions. By utilizing advanced computer-aided reverse engineering technology, we can reverse engineer parts and products quickly and cost-effectively from a sample of the worn or broken piece. We can also make necessary design changes or improve the part’s functionality. Our team has experience reverse engineering a wide range of parts, including:

  • Shafts and rollers
  • Gears and gearboxes
  • Transmission housings
